Our First Graders are 100 Days Smarter!

This week we celebrated the 100th day of school and our students had so much fun! We made hats, shared our "100 items from home" project, made a trail mix of 100 pieces of food & learned a 100 day rap. Thank you to all the students that brought in 100 items from home. There were so many creative projects and we enjoyed them! Here's a sneak peak into my classroom...

This week we also reviewed how to retell a story. This is SO important and a huge part of what determines their reading level. Every single time you read with your child have them retell the story to you using transition words first, next, then & finally. The more they do it the easier it will be for them!

Next week we will be learning how to identify the reasons an author gives to support their opinion in a text. One way you can practice this at home is to always have your child give reasons to why they want to do something. For example, if your child says they want a banana to eat instead of an apple have them tell you why and explain their thinking.

Have a great Friday and weekend!

Brrr....it's COLD!

Brrrr....it is COLD outside! We hope you are staying warm at the start of 2015!

We had a great first week back learning about how other countries celebrate New Years. We are also working on adding a two-digit number to a one-digit number in math. (Ex. 22 + 5 = 27)  When you are practicing this at home have your child show you their favorite strategy to solve those types of problems. Let THEM be the teacher! Let THEM teach you how they like to solve the problem.

Here's food for thought: Have you ever considered turning on the closed captioning on your TV at home? Think about how much reading your child would do in just one day if they had the words to read as they were watching their favorite TV show! Try it and let us know what you think!

Have a great weekend!
